On the surface, it may appear odd that a country whose food exports represent 4.7 percent of its total exports, and an industry which accounts for 10 percent of the total value of Danish exports is working on solutions to improve the value chain in the global food market.
The food industry offers high-end products which are often high in value and require a great deal of production and process refinement. Since the product range varies widely from one company to the other, it would appear that this is an ideal sector for collaborative innovation. But, this process has been surprisingly slow, with most innovations occurring in pilot projects in a few companies.
Food and Agriculture Market Intelligence Systems (MIS) are currently being developed in collaboration with business and research partners from countries with strong traditions in food innovation, such as Australia, New Zealand, the USA, France, the Netherlands, Germany and the UK.
The mission is to improve the global value chain for food innovation and development and, with regard to the Food and Agriculture (FAO) sector, to contribute to food security and nutrition through the improvement of the quality, safety, and availability of the products that will be produced on a global scale.
FAO is preparing a set of Global Market Intelligence System (GMIS) recommendations for member countries. We have worked on the production and manufacturing and service-based sectors, but this will be the first time the analysis has been applied to the value chain in the food sector.
The Danish Food and Agriculture Strategy (2011-2020) states that the Danish policy to support value chain innovation in the food sector needs to be clarified and that the Danish business sector needs to play a key role in ensuring that this happens.
The strategy also sets the long-term vision of improving the Danish position in the global food markets by developing the capacity of the Danish food industry to produce safe, good quality and safe products of good nutritional value for the consumer.
